Joel Marcovitch came to America from England with two bags, $150 and a will to help Jewish and non-Jewish college students explore their faiths and find common bonds.

At 4 p.m. Sunday the former assistant director of the University of Michigan Hillel will be escorted by U.S. Customs agents onto a plane bound for London, deported due to an administrative error with which he had nothing to do.

The 31-year-old’s ordeal began in late March when Marcovitch landed in Washington D.C. with a group of U-M students he led on an alternative spring break trip to Argentina where they built shelters for the underprivileged.
